Unique Photo Images
Shadows
Shadows in the folds of cotton batting makes for interesting studies of light. The images were taken by studying the patterns of a single light source illuminating the cotton batting on my wife's quilting frame. I could have spent hours just on a small 6 foot area of material.
Winter Abstracts
Using a dedicated Infrared Camera and 4 separate snow and ice images, I combined the photographs into layers and using the Difference blending mode, made this mysterious background surrounding the icicle.
In reverse (colors)
Sometimes taking the tones of a black and white photo and reversing them makes for an interesting visual study.
The Energy of Youth
This photo was taken following a Junior High Band Concert. The two boys were happy and celebrating a successful concert. I let the slow shutter speed capture the excitement and movement of the two Junior High Alto Saxophone players.
I set a goal yesterday to take photographs everyday. Thus forcing myself to try various techniques and review the various controls on each camera. It only takes a few seconds to setup and photograph "something". This everyday technique also forces me to mentally plan and develop new concepts with my existing equipment. Isn't digital wonderful.
What is it?
A fallen icicle. After melting snow on the roof and a long icicle on the corner of the house, we had 44 degrees. Here is the remains.
Ross Castle
In taking the photo of the Ross Castle near Killarney, Ireland, I became more interested in using the unusual bent tree to work with the Castle in the background than the castle itself. Foregrounds can make an image Wow!
IR Ice
Back into photography. I have been getting a show set up in the Des Plaines Public Library and getting ready for a Show at the Brickton Art Center in Park Ridge, IL.
To see the 13 image show in Des Plaines Public Library, go to the 4th floor and check out the show cases on both side of the elevator. One show is images form Tuscany and the other show is images that I am now working on with Painter and alternative photo techiniques.
I went out side today and just had to try shooting part of an Ice formation in Infrared. The isolation of the background really makes an interesting abatract.
Nature Challenge
Photographer Mark Southard posted a winter challenge. "Take photographs of letters of the alphabet as found in nature". This is a real challenge. Here is my version of the letter "N".
Wonderful World of Digital Photography
Shooting scenes at a dress rehearsal for the Big Noise Theatre's production of "The Beard of Avon" caused many lighting problems. This scene was nearly dark and the actors kept talking. I just turned up the ISO speed on the camera to 1600 and captured the scene. In the days of film we would have had to change to a faster speed film and reset the camera. Tickets are still available for the production.
Big Noise Theatre Company
This is Sarah Jane Blevins staring as Elizabeth, Queen of England, in "The Beard of Avon". The show runs Friday, Saturday and Sundays at Prairie Lakes Community Center in Des Plaines for three more weeks. call 847-604-0275 for tickets.
I photographed the final two dress rehearsals for the the cast. Available light was used in both the back stage areas and the theatre. Using an ISO of 1600 the camera had enough speed to capture the cast while moving in rehearsal.
Color is not everything
This mime was a street actor who stayed in character for long periods of time. She could endure comments from those walking by and stay in her own character of the day. We can all learn a lot from great actors. The lack of color of the photo was augmented because I used a camera set for black and white infrared. I tried different colors and still came back to the B&W version which to me looked best.
Low Tide
Many sea creatures hang on until the tide comes back in. These colorful starfish were on the coast of Alaska.

Grand Daughter Stephanie
Indiana Amish Country Panorama
As we walked around the farm in Indiana, grandson Matthew said wanted me to take two pictures of the scene across the highway from their farm. We did take two pictures. I then got turned on to merging the two photos into one scene by Tom Icklan, friend, photographer and teacher. Using the new beta photomerge in CS3 and using two infrared photos, the above image is the result. I then did a quadtone coloring of the image. My first photo of the new year - 2007.
